Introduction

Background

The mathematical sciences are in a period of unprecedented growth. Sophisticated mathematical and computational tools are rapidly bridging the gap between abstract theory and applications in science, engineering and other disciplines. The University thus set up the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in 1993 to organize activities related to a broad variety of fields including both pure and Applied mathematics, scientific computation, image processing, mathematical physics and statistics. Emphasis is on interaction and linkages with the physical sciences, engineering, industry and commerce. The Institute's major research projects are led by the directors and senior academics in the Departments of Mathematics.

The major aims of the Institute are to:

1. promote and stimulate researches in new frontiers of mathematics.
2. train and nurture young scientists.
3. bring in grants and contracts from governmental organizations and the private sector.
4. develop into a centre of excellence.
5. promote academic exchanges internationally.

Academic Programs

The Academic Programs in IMS include:

1. post-graduate study program (both M.S & Ph.D);
2. post-doctoral fellow program;
3. short-term academic visitor program;
4. regular graduate course, lecture series by visitors;
5. preprint series of research;
6. special concentrated research programs;
7. organizing seminars, colloquium, workshops and international conferences;
8. to manage three international research journals:

• AJM (The Asian Journal of Mathematics);
• MAA (Methods and Applications of Analysis);
• CIS (Communications in Information and Systems).
