Fred Hickernell was born in Okinawa, Japan, but grew up in the United States. He received his BA from Pomona College in 1977 and his PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981. He returned to the Orient in 1985 to join Hong Kong Baptist University (at that time Hong Kong Baptist College), and he has been Head of Mathematics since 1989. His present research is mainly in the area of quasi-Monte Carlo methods.
