Peter Taylor was born in Nottingham, England and migrated to Australia with his family while very young. He grew up in Adelaide and went to the University of Adelaide from which he received the B.Sc.(Hons) in 1980. He spent three years working for the Australian Public Service in Canberra before returning to the University of Adelaide as a tutor in 1983. He received a Ph.D. in applied mathematics in 1987.

After a two year stint as a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Western Australia, he returned in 1991 once more to the University of Adelaide where he is now an associate professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics.

His research interests are in stochastic processes and applied probability, with particular emphasis on teletraffic and biological applications. He has over 50 papers in refereed journals and 20 technical reports dealing with topics such as the theory of Markov chains, insensitivity theory, queueing networks, loss networks, matrix-analytic methods and stochastic Petri nets. In addition he has several papers on performance analysis of telecommunications systems.

Peter is a Co-Director of the University of Adelaide's Teletraffic Research Centre. He has been the recipient of a number of grants from the Australian Research Council and university funding bodies, and has been active on the organising committees of several conferences.
